Live In Joy

July 24, 2008

Live in Joy, In Love,

Even among those who hate.

Live in Joy, In Health,

Even among the afflicted.

Live in Joy, In Peace,

Even among th troubled.

Look within. Be still.

Free from fear and attachment,

Know the sweet joy of living in the way.

    Dear MUBSS,
I’m new to Buddhist philosophy. Could you give an idea of what this means?

Hmm… I think what it’s trying to tell is to be joyful and have your heart and thought calm in whichever situation either it’s good or bad.

I agree with this. Calmness is quite a good solution when one is down, as this help keeps the mindfulness of one person.

The intent of the lines ‘Live in Joy,In Health. Even among the afflicted’ merits discussion. One might think that a person who lives in joy amongst, say, people in a Nazi concentration (plainly the afflicted) would be heartless. The Buddha very clearly discusses the point in the Piyajatika Sutta (in the Middle Length Discourses)where he argues that fondness for one’s kin is aa source of ‘Grief and despair’.
Can any locate the passage quoted ‘Live in Joy’ – it sounds like the Dhammapada (! Found it : Dhammapada 15)
