Meditation Classes, Semester 1, 2012

Introduction to Buddhist Meditation Course (Six weeks) : Now starting….

The purpose of the Introduction to Buddhist Meditation course is to introduce students to the key principles of Buddhist meditation and mindfulness. The course runs over six weeks and classes include teaching and guided practice. Each class has a specific focus. Areas covered will include the body and posture, use of breath in meditation, grounded awareness, cultivating gratitude, acceptance of self and others and the 7 factors of enlightenment. This course is not intellectual, rather, emphasis will be placed on direct experience of meditation and mindfulness. Participants in the classes will experience a range of ways to strengthen a calm sense of centeredness and connection with body and mind. Skills developed in class allow participants to approach daily life with greater calm, clarity, open-heartedness and equanimity.

The course is affiliated with the Melbourne University Buddhist Studies Society and will be taught by Lydia Brown. Lydia has trained in Vipassana (insight) meditation and mindfulness under the guidance of Venerable Bhante Kassapa (a Sri Lankan Monk of the Theravadan Forest tradition) since 2006. Her training has included a number of months of intensive silent meditation retreat. Currently studying a Masters of Clinical Psychology and a PhD on psychological well-being during midlife, her interest is in integrating Buddhist principles with modern clinical psychology.
